Scammers Revamp Old Scams to Current Events

June 13, 2016

Crafty scammers are always looking for ways to get personal information from unsuspecting individuals. They will often develop new scams or revamp old ones using the latest headlines as a platform.  The scam begins with an email that seems to be from a friend. This message explains that the person has been in Egypt (a country that has been in the news a lot lately) and has had some sort of trouble and needs a specific amount of money to pay off bills and get home. The scam is meant to play on your awareness of the situation in Egypt and your concern for your friend’s well-being. Be on your guard if you see a message like this, and watch for warning signs such as vague wording, that could signal a scam. Also, don’t assume the message is legitimate because it appears to be from your friend. Online email and social networking accounts can be hacked or malicious software used to get email addresses. If an account has been hacked, other friends may receive the same message as well. Using scams related to big news headlines is just one of the many ways scammers try to distract you into giving up personal information or hard-earned cash.
